Good news for Garmin: TomTom loses South Africa market
TomTom’s alleged gross mismanagement of its South Africa relationship with its sole distributor in the area, Core, has caused Core to drop its contract with TomTom.
Over and over, says Core, TomTom failed to deliver enough units to fill orders, and when they did, the devices contained maps of too-small areas that were several generations behind Garmin maps anyway.
This is excellent news for Garmin, since most people who would have bought TomToms will now choose Garmin. If TomTom tries to establish a presence in the area again it is facing an already uphill battle.
